Super Shane blows away Swede at Lakeside world championships

IRELAND'S Shane McGuirk lit up the Lakeside for the second day in succession as he stormed into the last 16 of the WDF World Championships with an impressive 3-0 win over Sweden's Edwin Torbjörnsson.

The Monaghan man, who came into the tournament as an unseeded qualifier, made light work of the 13th seed as he was in imperious form on his doubles.

McGuirk rattled off the first two sets without losing a leg, and without missing a double, as he showed why he's a dangerous darkhorse for the title.

The Arrow hit three 180s and the game's highest checkout of 111 as he recorded a tournament best average of 96.16.

Torbjornsson, to his credit, kept himself in the game in the third set as he won two legs to bring it to a last leg decider.

However, McGuirk kept his nerve to win that final leg in just 15 darts by taking out 98 on double 12.

McGuirk will now have a few days off before returning to Lakeside action on Wednesday evening for his last 16 clash against either Australia's Brandon Weening or Jun Matsuda of Japan.

A victory there would put him into the last eight and amongst the real contenders to go on and win the WDF World Championships.
