SHANE McGuirk has created history by winning the WDF World Championship at Lakeside in stunning fashion.

The Arrow has become the first man from the Republic of Ireland to win the World Championships as he beat veteran Paul Lim 6-3 in the final.

Monaghan man McGuirk was the first player since Eric Bristow to make it all the way to the final without losing a set.

And he looked like he might keep that up after streaking into a 4-0 lead as he stunned Lim with his heavy scoring start.

However the experienced Lim, playing in his first Lakeside final 34 years after he hit the only ever nine darter there, gradually got himself back into the game.

He won three of the next four sets to make McGuirk sweat as they headed for the third and final break of the match.

When play resumed, McGuirk, who hit nine 180s and average 90.31 for the match, got an early break on Lim's throw and then never looked back.

He won the next leg with a brilliant 95 finish as Lim lurked on 45 and then won the match with a double top with his last dart in hand.

Speaking afterwards an emotional McGuirk said he was "speechless".

He gushed: "I can't believe what has just happened, I'm a world champion."

All that was left was for McGuirk to pick up the trophy and the winner's €50,000 cheque after his incredible week at Lakeside ended in glory.
