CORK'S John O'Shea performed the best out of the eight Irish players vying for a PDC Tour Card on the first day of Q School final stage.

The Joker made it as far as the last 16 and is well placed on the Q School Order Of Merit as he looks to regain a tour card he lost two years ago.

O'Shea had a series of impressive wins throughout the day before succumbing to England's Tom Sykes in his last 16 clash.

He gave a sign of things to come by averaging 97 in his opening win over Owen Maiden, before also picking up wins over Andy Boulton and Justin Hood.

It means O'Shea sits in 13th place on the Order of Merit, with 2 points  and a +7  leg average.

With the top nine places on the ranking table securing tour cards come Sunday, alongside the four daily winners,  he is well in contention.

Elsewhere, Waterford's Dean Finn sits in 36th place in the table after he was victorious over Limerick's Michael Flynn in his opening match, before losing 6-4 in his last 64 clash to England's Nigel Prior.

Mayo's Conor Heneghan also picked up a win in his opening game over Ryan Furness before he too fell at the last 64 hurdle.

The remaining Irish players - Monaghan's Shane McGuirk, Galway's Dylan Dowling, Donegal's Dean Gallagher and Mayo's Ultan McDyer - all have a bit of work to do after losing their opening games today.

However, with three days still to go, there is still plenty of time for all of them to pick up some wins and shoot up the Order of Merit table.
