LIMERICK'S Willie O'Connor was one of eight players to qualify for the Winmau World Masters today as he came through three stiff tests to set up a clash in the main event against Rob Cross.
O'Connor got his new year campaign off to the perfect start by beating Danny Lauby, Jeffrey De Graaf and Richard Veenstra to claim one of the coveted qualifying spots.
However he was the only Irish player to qualify today, as Tipperary's Dylan Slevin and Tyrone's Micky Mansell fell at the final hurdle against Holland's Kevin Doets and Scotland's William Borland respectively.
Meanwhile, Meath's Keane Barry fell at the last 32 stage to Poland's Krzysztof Ratajski in a high quality clash that saw eight seed Ratajski average just over 100.
Earlier in the day, rising young Tipperary star Aidan O'Hara, Carlow's Steve Lennon and leading ladies player Robyn Byrne had competed in the qualifying preliminary rounds but failed to come through their groups to the final stages.
