NEW WDF world darts champion Shane McGuirk received a hero's homecoming in Monaghan on Monday night as he returned with the trophy.

Hundreds of people gathered in McGuirk's home town of Aughnamullen to cheer the Arrow on following his heroics at Lakeside.

The darts star was led into the Aughnamullen social centre - which had been packed on Sunday night for McGuirk's 6-3 final win over Paul Lim - by a pipe band.

He was greeted by loud cheers as he held the WDF trophy aloft, with Aughnamullen GAA club, who Shane played for as a juvenile, describing him as a "hero".

The 29-year-old then headed for the Welcome Inn, Ballybay, the team he plays for in the Monaghan Darts League, where he was greeted by fellow players and local politicians.

Speaking about the homecoming, an elated Shane said: "That was special to me tonight. Thanks to all who turned up to support me and welcome me home from an incredible few weeks at the world championship."

The celebrations aren't done yet with Shane set to attend a special event at the Plex Bar in Threemilehouse on Tuesday night, where Monaghan's growing band of youths darts players will get a chance to be pictured with him and the world championship trophy.
