Ronan up and running with two wins on Modus debut

OFFALY'S Ronan McDonagh has made a decent start to his Modus Super Series debut as he picked up two wins that keeps him in contention on the first day of Group A action.

McDonagh, who qualified for Modus  by winning the ADC Ireland regional qualifier back in November, showed he's more than up to it with some impressive displays that saw him take down the experienced Welshman Mark Warburton and Australia's Jeremy Fagg.

However, the reigning INDO inter-county B singles champion will be a bit frustrated with himself that some missed doubles cost him the chance of wins in some other games that could have him closer to the top of the table.

He lost out in a last leg decider to group leader Lee Cocks - who won all five of his games today - which would have had him just two points off first place by the end of today's action.

Ronan began his day with a 4-3 win over Mark Warburton as he announced himself on the Modus Super stage in style.

His next encounter was the defeat to Cocks, before he wrapped up his second victory of the day with a 4-2 win over Fagg.

That would have had McDonagh dreaming of a crack at making top spot, but doubles trouble cost him that chance as he lost out in his final two games to Conan Whitehead and Alexander Masek.

He now trails both those players by two points in the table, but is still very much in contention to make it into Group B later in the week, while still also having the chance to put a series of wins together over the next two days that could yet see him emerge as Group A winner and into finals night.
