McDyer on fire as he eyes up finals night

ULTAN McDyer has given himself a fighting chance of making it to finals night on his Modus Super Series debut after picking up three Group C wins today.

He is one of three players on six points in the group,  just two off the leader Henry Coates, meaning he's well placed to have a crack tomorrow at gaining one of the two qualifying spots.

However the Mayo man will be kicking himself that he lost a last leg decider to Justin Smith in his final game, that could have seen him joint top of the table with Coates, while also denting Smith's chances.

McDyer was in fine form throughout the day, even landing the highest checkout of the week so far with a monstrous 164 against Patrick Dekker, with his opponent sitting on double top.

That big moment inspired McDyer to an excellent whitewash win over Dekker, which added to earlier wins over Luke Smith and Mason Whitlock.

That meant McDyer, who had lost his opening game of the day 4-0 to Henry Coates, went into his final match with the chance to finish off the first day of Group C with four wins out of five.

That prospect remained on the cards as the game was tied at 3-3, before Smith held his nerve to hit double 10 with his last dart in hand to claim what could yet prove to be a crucial win for him in the group.

It couldn't be any tighter, with Smith, McDyer and Whitlock all locked on six  points each, and all with a +2 leg difference.

It means every game will be crucial tomorrow as McDyer looks to emulate Offaly's Ronan McDonagh from last week, by making it to finals night at his first time of trying.
