RONAN McDonagh came within a whisker of automatic qualification for finals night as he enjoyed his best day yet on his Modus Super Series debut.

The Offaly arrowsmith won four of his five games today as he finished in a three-way tie at the top of Group A, only missing out on winning it on leg difference.

It means he will now advance to Group B, where he will fancy his chances of gaining one of the three places up for grabs for finals night if he keeps up his current form.

McDonagh qualified to take part in the Modus Super Series by winning through the ADC Ireland regional qualifiers and has certainly done himself and his country proud.

Despite a slow start today, in which McDonagh lost his opening game 4-0 to Mark Warburton, he soon  picked it up to remain unbeaten for the rest of the day.

His four wins over Australia's Jeremy Fagg, the English pair of Lee Cocks and Conan Whitehead and Czech star Alexander Masek, saw McDonagh finish off his Group A campaign with an impressive 18 points.

That saw him tie on points with eventual group winner, Whitehead, and Lee Cocks, with the final placings decided by leg difference.

Both Cocks and McDonagh now go into Group B, where they will be joined by Carl Snyed, Gary Mawson and Charlie Large.

Meanwhile, McDonagh's fellow Irishman, Niall Culleton, will be in Group C action tomorrow, opening up the possibility of two Irish players making it to finals night come Saturday.
