MONAGHAN'S Shane McGuirk has picked up his first point at PDC Q School final stage on an otherwise tough day for the Irish at the event.
The WDF World Champion was the best of the Irish as he made it as far as the last 32 today, gaining him a crucial Order of Merit point.
He began his day with an impressive 6-1 win over England's Lee Budgen, before coming from 5-4 down to win a last leg decider over Jack Tweddell in the last 64.
However he was unable to keep his run going after that, bowing out 6-3 to Scotland's Greg Ritchie in a high quality game in which both players averaged over 90.
It means McGuirk sits in 34th place in the ranking table, with 1 point and a plus 2 leg average, two points off the top nine spot he will need to gain a tour card, if he doesn't win a day outright.
Cork's John O'Shea was unable to add to the 2 points he gained on the opening day as he bowed out in the last 64 to John Henderson of Scotland.
O'Shea is now 22nd in the ranking table, but with a plus 9 leg average he is still well in contention with two days left to play.
Elsewhere, Donegal's Dean Gallagher, Mayo's Conor Heneghan and Limerick's Michael Flynn were all knocked out at the last 64 stage, while Waterford's Dean Finn, Galway's Dylan Dowling and Mayo man Ultan McDyer lost in the first round today.
They will all be back in action tomorrow when all eight of the Irish will be hoping to pick up some crucial wins and fly up the ranking table.
