Mayo man Ultan gets debut Modus win

MAYO'S Ultan McDyer got his debut Modus Super Series campaign underway today and picked up an impressive win over the WDF's number three ranked player Brandon Weening.

McDyer, who qualified for Modus through the ADC Ireland regional qualifiers, held his nerve to beat Australian Weening in a last leg decider to pick up his first points in Group A.

The win over Weening came in his third game of the day, after McDyer had earlier lost to Justin Smith and Group A leader Danny Van Trijp.

He later threatened a big comeback against the experienced Richie Howson, but eventually fell to a 4-2 defeat in that game.

A series of missed doubles in his last match of the day against Patrick Dekker  then cost McDyer the chance of picking up some more crucial points in the race for finals night.

As it is, McDyer remains ahead of Dekker in the Group A table with two days left to go, when he will be hoping a good run could see him claim at least a spot in Group B later in the week.
