RECENTLY crowned WDF world darts champion Shane McGuirk has added to his growing list of honours after he received a Civic Reception from Monaghan County Council on Monday night to hail his incredible achievement.

Proud Monaghan man Shane told Darts In Ireland that he was "grateful" for the reception he had received throughout the county since winning the world title at Lakeside in December.

And he hopes it will inspire more youngsters in Monaghan to take up darts and try to emulate his achievements on the oche.

Speaking about receiving the Civic Reception, Shane said:  "It's good to see that everyone has backed me here. To get a reception like this for the achievement I had is really good to see.

"It's great to see how many people tuned in to watch me play, and appreciate that I am now a world champion and that's great for a small county like Monaghan and hopefully it continues.

"I don't know if I will every do it again but even if I don't, it can never be taken away me."

Shane says he hopes his success on the world stage will be good for the game of darts in Monaghan.

He said: "I'm proud of us all here in Monaghan as it takes a village, not just one man to do this. Sometimes I need a kick up the backside, and I do get that on the regular, so I'm grateful for that too."

He added that youngsters in the county, and beyond, should take confidence from the fact that if he can do it, they all can.

Shane said: "The youths are the future, no matter what sport it is, and for us here this is something that they could look at and say 'I want to be the next him, the next champion'."

Meanwhile, Shane says he's looking forward to competing with the Monaghan team at the upcoming INDO inter-county A championships at the end of this month.

Monaghan have made it to the quarter finals at the last two inter-county championships, and Shane hopes they can push on this year.

He said: "We all bring each other on in the county and we are all improving. There's more events for us to go to now and the league is getting stronger as well.

"I hope that I could be inspiring some of the lads to push on a bit, so they can try beat me in the league and try that little bit harder.

"But for us in Monaghan we will go down to that and do what we always do, which is to make Monaghan proud and maybe get that step further towards and All Ireland title."
